The Sikkim State Cooperative Union (SICUN) has proposed an annual ‘Sir Tashi Namgyal Cooperative Excellence Award’ to honour individuals, societies and institutions contributing to the cooperative movement.
Chairman Mangal Jit Rai led a delegation that met Prince Palden Gyurmed Namgyal in Gangtok, seeking his patronage. The delegation also proposed the first Sir Tashi Namgyal Memorial Lecture on April 2, 2027, coinciding with SICUN’s silver jubilee celebrations.
Gyurmed Namgyal welcomed both initiatives and assured full support. The award will recognise excellence in leadership, innovation and community empowerment, while the memorial lecture will promote research, policy dialogue and knowledge-sharing, drawing inspiration from Sikkim’s cooperative heritage dating back to 1917-18.
