The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on Tuesday passed the J&K Cooperative Societies (Amendment) Bill, 2026, aimed at streamlining the cooperative legislative framework in the Union Territory.
Moved by Cooperative Department Minister Javid Ahmad Dar during the Autumn session, the Bill provides for amendments to the J&K Cooperative Societies Act, 1989, and repeal of the J&K Self-Reliant Cooperative Act, 1999. It also establishes a transitional framework for self-reliant cooperative societies under the principal Act.
The Bill was discussed at length, with legislators offering suggestions and observations. Dar said the amendments would bring greater coherence, transparency and effectiveness to the cooperative sector and ensure a smooth transition for self-reliant cooperatives.
The House subsequently passed the legislation through a voice vote.
