u s awasthiIndia is celebrating the National Milk Day on the 92nd birth day of Verghese Kuiren which falls on 26th November. Dr Verghese Kurien built brand Amul and pioneered the cooperative milk movement in Gujarat and later in whole of India.

GCMMF has lined up a series of programmes throughout the week to remember the doyen of cooperative and learn from his works.

Remembering him on this occasion IFFCO Managing Director Dr U S Awasthi said that his magic of employing cooperative model to improve the lot of poor was remarkable.

Dr. U S Awasthi (@drusawasthi) tweeted “ #IFFCO pays tribute to# Verghese Kurien father of# White Revolution on his birth anniversary. Implementation through # COOP model commendable.”

Milk was a tool no doubt. Kurien wanted to empower rural India and he chose milk as the means. Farmers became producer-owner in the cooperative revolution that was unleashed by Kurien in the Gujarat villages transforming India into the largest producer of milk relegating the US to number two in the world.

His reputation was such that the World Bank offered unsolicited loans to Amul and heads of states, one after the other came visiting Gujarat. They were amused by the social empowerment of the very poor as it was a unique experiment unheard of anywhere else in the world.
