Amul: GCMMF Board clips executives’ power

Amul marketing cooperative leviathan Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation’s board has unanimously decided that in future elected representatives rather than officials or executives like MD would act as nominees of the federation.

The unprecedented decision is likely to have wide-ranging implications as it would bring about devolution of power within the organization.

GCMMF’s Chairman Vipul Chaudhary has said the decision has been taken under section 74-c of the Gujarat cooperative societies Act and is exclusively intended to give power to cooperative dairy farmers.

Sugar and bank cooperatives follow the same blueprint. The elected representative will have a voting right and thus exercise their democratic influence within the power structure.

The change will clip executives’ wings and enable the federation’s board to appreciate better the problems and difficulties faced by the grassroots member unions, he claimed.

Mr Chaudhary says chairmen of Surendranagar’s Sursagar Dairy and Rajkot’s Gopal Dairy have already decided to act as GCMMF’s nominee in each other’s board.

Similar arrangements have been worked out between chairmen of Bhavnagar’s Sarvottam Dairy and Amreli’s Amar Dairy and Bharuch’s Dudhdhara Dairy and Surat’s Sumul Dairy. The change will greatly encourage cooperation between dairy unions in the days ahead, he remarked.
