The Jammu and Kashmir government has decided to set up two women co-operative banks, one each in Srinagar and Jammu, in a move aimed at strengthening the co-operative sector and promoting women empowerment, media reports say.

Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Abdul Aziz Zargar announced the decision while inaugurating a three-day leadership development programme for directors of Maharashtra co-operative banks. He highlighted the significant role of co-operatives in the socio-economic development of the region and stressed the need to expand their reach.

The proposed banks are expected to enhance financial inclusion among women and support entrepreneurship. The initiative reflects the government’s focus on leveraging co-operative institutions for inclusive growth and greater participation of women in economic activities across the Union Territory.
