India has emerged as a major market for cooperative finance in Asia, with 1,457 credit unions serving 8.52 crore members, according to the World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU) Statistical Report 2025.
The report underlines the significant role of financial cooperatives and credit unions in promoting financial inclusion and serving communities across different regions. India’s credit unions reported US$65.03 billion (about Rs 5.5 lakh crore) in savings and shares, US$43.96 billion (about Rs 3.7 lakh crore) in loans, and total assets of US$82.21 billion (about Rs 7 lakh crore).
Globally, the WOCCU report covers 61,838 credit unions across 93 countries, representing nearly 42 crore members and almost US$4 trillion (about Rs 340 lakh crore) in assets.
The report notes that the global cooperative finance landscape varies significantly from region to region. While North America accounts for roughly three-quarters of reported global assets, Asia, Latin America and Africa account for a substantial share of global membership.
