The Cooperation Department, Gangtok District, in collaboration with Sikkim State Co-operative Bank (SISCO), organised a financial literacy camp, cooperative awareness programme and membership drive at Gnathang, located at an altitude of 12,800 feet.
The programme focused on improving awareness of banking services, credit facilities, government schemes, safe banking practices and the benefits of cooperative societies among the remote community.
Additional Registrar Kessang Yankee Bhutia highlighted the role of Multipurpose Cooperative Societies (MPCSs) in addressing local needs and creating livelihood opportunities. She encouraged members to utilise available loan and subsidy schemes, including PM Vishwakarma, SISCO facilities and the DMA Cash Kendra.
Officials also discussed opportunities to develop tourism packages, guide services, catering, cafeterias and other local enterprises, including initiatives under the Vibrant Villages Programme.
SISCO Branch Manager Tshering Doma Bhutia briefed participants on savings, Kisan Credit Cards, SISCO products and government-backed insurance schemes, while cautioning against digital fraud and sharing OTPs or PINs.
A DMA mobile van, equipped to provide basic banking services, was also deployed to improve financial inclusion in the remote high-altitude area.
