The National Cooperative Consumers’ Federation of India (NCCF) has highlighted the transformative potential of the world’s largest grain storage initiative, saying it will strengthen farmers, improve storage infrastructure and ensure better returns for agricultural produce.
In a recent interview, NCCF Managing Director explained that the ambitious programme aims to create modern grain storage facilities at the Primary Agricultural Credit Society (PACS) level, enabling farmers to safely store their produce instead of resorting to distress sales immediately after harvest.
The initiative is expected to reduce post-harvest losses, improve the quality of stored grains and empower farmers to sell their produce when market prices are favourable. By providing scientific storage facilities closer to villages, the scheme will also reduce transportation costs and enhance the efficiency of the agricultural supply chain.
The grain storage plan forms a key part of the Ministry of Cooperation’s vision of “Sahkar Se Samriddhi”, leveraging the cooperative network to improve rural infrastructure, strengthen food security and increase farmers’ incomes through better storage, value realization and market access.
