The Tamil Nadu Government has launched the sale of onions at a subsidised price of Rs 35 per kg to check rising onion prices and provide relief to consumers, with NAFED and NCCF playing a key role in the procurement of the commodity.
As part of the market intervention initiative, the Tamil Nadu Government has procured 1,000 metric tonnes of onions from Nashik, Maharashtra, through the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) and the National Cooperative Consumers’ Federation of India (NCCF).
From September 3, onions are being sold across Tamil Nadu at Rs 35 per kg, with a limit of one kilogram per family card.
The subsidised onions will be made available through 8,914 outlets, including urban Fair Price Shops, District Consumer Cooperative Wholesale Stores, Primary Cooperative Stores, Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation retail outlets and Farm Fresh outlets.
The first sale was inaugurated in Chennai on Thursday by Food and Civil Supplies Minister P. Venkataramanan and Cooperation Minister V. Gandhirajan at a Fair Price Shop on T.T.K. Road under the Triplicane Urban Cooperative Society.
