The Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare celebrated Mahila Kisan Diwas 2026 in New Delhi on October 15, recognising women farmers’ contributions to agricultural development and the vision of Viksit Bharat.
Chaired by Department Secretary Atish Chandra, the event highlighted women’s role in food security, rural livelihoods, natural resource management and sustainable farming. Chandra reaffirmed the government’s commitment to empowering women through income support, institutional credit, technology transfer, skill development, farm mechanisation and better marketing infrastructure.
Progressive women farmers and agricultural extension workers participated in the programme, where outstanding women farmers were felicitated for their achievements. The book “Women Farmers of India: Journey from Challenges to Success” was also released, showcasing inspiring stories of innovation, resilience and rural entrepreneurship.
The event highlighted women’s contributions across the agricultural value chain, from cultivation and livestock management to seed conservation and value addition. Celebrations were also organised across states and Union Territories, with special emphasis on women farmers from tribal regions.
