The Assam Co-operative Apex Bank has emerged as a major success story of institutional revival, transforming itself from a bank once on the verge of losing its Reserve Bank of India (RBI) licence into a profitable scheduled bank through technology-driven reforms and improved management.
Highlighting the bank’s remarkable turnaround, Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma said the institution, which had earlier faced serious regulatory challenges and required RBI intervention to regulate its operations, has now regained its position and is consistently registering profits.
The Chief Minister was speaking at a programme held at Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra in Guwahati on Sunday, where he distributed appointment letters to 439 candidates recruited in various government departments. Of these, 175 appointments were made in the Assam Co-operative Apex Bank, providing a significant boost to its workforce.
Dr. Sarma described the bank as an important pillar of Assam’s cooperative movement and said its transformation had been driven by the extensive adoption of information technology and artificial intelligence. The bank is now fully managed through technology-based systems, which have strengthened its operational efficiency and institutional functioning.
He further pointed out that the bank’s improved financial position had enabled it to secure scheduled bank status. This recognition has also made it eligible to safely hold government deposits, reflecting the confidence it has regained as a financial institution.
Beyond direct recruitment, the Chief Minister noted that the bank has also generated numerous indirect employment opportunities, contributing to the state’s economic activity.
The announcement of 175 appointments in the Apex Bank was part of the larger recruitment exercise covering the Cooperation, Labour Welfare, Public Health Engineering and Water Resources departments. The programme marked another milestone in the Assam government’s recruitment drive, taking the total number of government appointments under its two terms to 1,65,749.
The Chief Minister congratulated the newly appointed candidates and their families, while emphasising that government employment should be viewed as an opportunity to serve society rather than merely a means of securing personal financial advancement.
He also urged the newly recruited employees to maintain integrity, adopt emerging technologies and continuously upgrade their professional skills, warning that artificial intelligence would increasingly transform the functioning of government offices in the coming years.
The appointment programme was attended by several ministers, senior officials and public representatives, including MLA and Chairman of Assam Co-operative Apex Bank Ltd. Biswajit Phukan.
