The Gauhati High Court has directed the Assam government to file a detailed affidavit by November 6, 2026, on the constitution of the Board of Directors of Assam Cooperative Apex Bank Ltd, media reports say.
A bench comprising Chief Justice Ashutosh Kumar and Justice Kaushik Goswami issued the direction while hearing a PIL filed by the bank’s shareholders and members, alleging that seven directors had exceeded the statutory limit on continuous tenure.
Senior advocate K.N. Choudhury, representing the petitioners, submitted that the bank is a Scheduled State Cooperative Bank governed by the Assam Cooperative Societies Act, 2007, its bylaws and the Banking Regulation Act, 1949.
