Eleven of Karnataka’s 16 cooperative milk unions reported a combined profit of around Rs 39.95 crore during April-July, while five unions posted losses, with Chikkaballapur recording the highest loss of Rs 11.88 crore, media reports say.
The figures come as the unions seek a milk price hike. Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, after meeting union presidents, said the final decision would be taken after discussion in the State Cabinet.
The government will also examine milk prices in neighbouring Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. The unions have sought a Rs 12-per-litre increase, including Rs 2 for milk producer societies.
The 16 unions procure around 1.04 crore litres daily and sell about 62.48 lakh litres of milk and curd.
