UN Representative visits NCUI

Having celebrated 2012 as the International Year of Cooperative United Nations is studying the impact of cooperatives in various countries. One of its representatives Mr Dave Grace came calling to India as Indian represents the strongest cooperative movement in the world.

The UN Representative Mr. Dave Grace visited NCUI for detailed discussion about the various achievements, issues and problems faced by the various sectors of Indian Cooperative Movement.

In course of discussion Dr. Dinesh, Chief Executive, NCUI briefed him about the achievements of credit and non-credit sector of the cooperative movement in the national economy.

He urged that UN can also be made aware about creating an enabling environment by Government of India through 97th Constitutional Amendment and making formation of cooperative society a Fundamental Right in the nation.

The opinion that cooperative may play a major role in poverty alleviation and livelihood programme in the rural and urban India as well as food-security of the country emerged in the discussion.

Some of the labour cooperatives in the states like Punjab, Haryana and Sikkim are being considered for construction related work in the state. Similarly fertilizer sector through cooperatives like IFFCO and KRIBHCO are marketing and distributing fertilizer to the farmers through its member societies.

NCUI’s Chief Executive Dr Dinesh emphasized on the role of cooperative in empowering women in the country.
Mr. Dave Grace was keen on knowing the turn over, total assets and annual gross revenue of various cooperatives functioning in the country and if they have entered in areas such as telecom, electricity and water sector.
