NCUI is for capacity building, not for earning profit: CE clarifies

Speaking to Indian Cooperative on the phone, NCUI Chief Executive N Satyanarayan has denied charges of the apex body raking in a lot of money through NCCE. The story titled “NCCE ignites co-op movement thru VLEs; also earns handsomely” published by www.indiancooperative.com has provoked his rebuttal. The CE said though the story is not untrue, it unwittingly creates an impression that the apex cooperative body is busy making money.

“NCUI mainly organizes capacity building activities for co-operators in order to build a robust co-operative movement in the country. Earning money had never been the goal of the apex co-op body”, the CE added.

Soon after him, V K Dubey, Head of NCCE also phoned this correspondent thanking us for the piece and requesting us to publish the fact that the small fees charged during the training from the participants are spent on the organization of the training programs. “We are hardly left with any profit as such”, Dubey said.

Curious about their reactions, Indian Cooperative tried to find out the truth of the matter. We wondered that the story was there for two days and nobody had reacted but suddenly the NCUI bosses were disturbed.

On condition of anonymity one of the Ministry officials told us a part of the truth. “The Ministry has taken note of the story as well as of the fact that NCUI is earning profit through training of VLEs. They have begun to wonder if NCUI needs any grant now”, said the official. This has unnerved NCUI official as they fear this might goad the ministry into reducing the already delayed govt grant, he added.

In the story we had reported that “Fascinating stories on NCCE an arm of the apex cooperative body NCUI partnering with the govt of India in preparing an army of trained cooperators who would manage the affairs of multi-purpose District Co-op Societies are grabbing the media headlines these days.

Known as Village Level Entrepreneurs VLEs, these trained co-operators are being churned out every month from the headquarters of NCUI in Delhi. NCCE is also getting handsome fees for the same.

Though in the original story CE N Satyanarayan was careful as we reported “Correcting him (V K Dubey) promptly, CE Satyanarayan said” our aim is not to make profit but we are happy as this process has ignited a co-op movement which remains quiet and effective.

The whole thing started with NCUI signing a Memorandum of Understanding with CSC-Ë-Governance India Services to conduct Management Development Program on “Cooperative Management” for Village Level Entrepreneurs.
