NCUI convenes meeting of Women Co-op Committee

The National Cooperative Union of India had convened a meeting for members of National Cooperative Committee for Empowerment of Women recently at NCUI headquarters in Delhi. The main aim behind the constitution of this committee was to guide and monitor the activities for empowerment of Women through the Cooperative sector.

The meeting was convened under the chairmanship of Dr Chanderpal Singh Yadav, M.P & President of NCUI New Delhi. N. Satyanarayana, Chief Executive NCUI is the member convener of the committee.

Dr. V.K Dubey, Director, (NCCE), Smt Sandhya Kapoor, Dy. Director (WEP) and Smt Veena Sachdeva, Asstt. Director (WEP) were also present in the meeting. The members presented a brief report of activities conducted in their respective areas for development of women. The programmes being conducted by the NCCE of NCUI for women programmes were appreciated by the committee.

Chandrapal Singh Yadav appreciated the work of the members and said through this committee NCUI is able to achieve gender-integration in cooperatives and also improve the socio-economic status of women co-operators. He also assured the members of the continued support of NCUI in the work of Women Empowerment.

Dr Nandini Azad, President of the Indian Cooperative Network for Women (ICNW) presented a brief report of the activities of her cooperative to the National Cooperative Union of India (NCUI).

In her report Mrs Azad said the Indian Cooperative Network for Women (ICNW), the first co-operative society in the south for poor women and of poor women was initiated in May, 1981. The successful ICNW experiment demonstrates the manner in which the poor women learned to take their own decisions through collective consciousness and demonstrated their self-help, self-management process despite being poor and vulnerable.

ICNW strengthened not only their economic roles to enhance their existing skills and/or trained in new skills but also enabled the other women in neighborhoods to join this effort acclaimed as the best practice model in Asia and very transparent in its functioning, she underlined.
