Nabard Chairman Dr. Harish Kumar Bhanwala says a steep decline in the share of cooperatives in rural credit over the recent years has been a matter of deep concern.

He advocated for three steps such as leveraging of technology, improvement in cooperative management and ensuring sufficient capital ratio. He was addressing the media in Chandigarh.

According to him, his meetings with Punjab and Haryana chief ministers was cordial and he found their response very positive.

Bhanwala said Punjab chief minister has asked for substantial financial help for modernization of milk plants to increase their various facilities in order to add to the profit of milk farmers through cooperative milk organizations.

The Nabard chief added the greatest challenge facing him at the moment is ‘collection of farmers and consolidation of small land holdings”. He sounded confident about the financial situation of his organization and claimed NPA did not exist as a problem.

Comparing Punjab and Haryana regarding NPA he said Punjab has no problem but Haryana to show a better performance in agricultural cooperative banks.
