IFFCO greets Swaminathan on his 90th birthday

Farmers’ cooperative IFFCO was one of the firsts to congratulate M.S. Swaminathan, known as the ‘Father of Green Revolution’ on his 90th birthday on Friday. IFFCO MD wished him happy birth day through a tweet.

Dr. U S Awasthi tweeted “On behalf of #IFFCO a very happy birthday to the father of #Green Revolution @msswaminathan his contributions to #growth of India r immense.

M.S. Swaminathan who was born on August 7, 1925 is credited with developing  high-yielding varieties (HYV) of wheat and later, promoted sustainable development which he called, the ‘evergreen revolution’.

In 1960s, India was on the verge of a mass famine. M.S. Swaminathan along with Norman Bolaug and other scientists, developed HYV seeds of wheat. This development led to Green Revolution in India and Indian geneticist, M.S. Swaminathan was known as ‘The Father of Green Revolution’

There is a commonality of purpose between activities of IFFCO and the works of Swaminathan, as both intend to improve the quality of farmers’ life. This perhaps explains Dr US Awasthi’s promptness in wishing Swaminathan on his birthday.
