In the series of co-operatives lending a helping hand to the victims of Kerala flood, co-op titan IFFCO donated a cheque of Rs 25 lakh to the state on Thursday. IFFCO officials personally handed the Cheque to Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan at latter’s office.
Earlier, the largest labour cooperative in the country- Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative Society (ULCCS) had given a cheque of Rs 25 lakhs towards the Kerala Chief Minister flood relief fund. Those present in the case of ULCC included its Chairman, MD and CEO.
There are reports of several other cooperatives supplying essential items like medicines, sanitary napkins, water cans and food for the victims.
Sharing the news through social media, IFFCO MD Dr U S Awasthi tweeted that, “Today, #IFFCO donated Rs 25 Lakh towards #Kerala CM Distress Relief Fund to Hon’ble CM Sh. @vijayanpinarayi for extending Relief and Rehabilitation work in the state. @CMOKerala #KerelaFloodRelief”.
It bears recall that in the wake of Kerala reeling from the worst flood in several decades, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had called upon the people to make generous contributions towards the Chief Minister’s Distress Relief
In a recent report from Kerala, though people from relief camps have started returning to their homes, more than 10.40 lakh people were still in 2,770 camps across the state. After the flood waters started receding, nearly five lakh people have gone back to their houses over the past few days.
More than 3,500 fishermen are also engaged in rescue operations and they saved nearly 65,000 people, state fisheries J Mercykutty Amma said.
IFFCO had been active in case of nature’s calamity hitting not only Indian shores but also its neighbor, said an IFFCO official. “We were one of the firsts to help in case of Chennai floods as well as in case of Nepal earthquake in the past”, he added comparing the benevolence of a cooperative vis a vis corporate.
