With the release of the final list of contesting candidates on Wednesday, the electoral picture for the Governing Council of the National Cooperative Union of India (NCUI) has become clear.
Out of the 20 Governing Council seats, 10 candidates have already been elected unopposed, while polling will now be held for the remaining 10 seats across five constituencies on July 18, 2026.
The candidates elected unopposed are Pravin Darekar, G.T. Devegowda, Agadi Ashok, G.H. Amin, Sunil Kumar, T. Prasad Dora, Meghnad Pal, Mudit Verma, Dhananjay Singh and D.N. Thakur, representing different constituencies of the Governing Council.
Among the seven seats reserved for State and Union Territory Cooperative Unions, five have been filled unopposed. Elections will now be held for the remaining two seats.
In the constituency comprising Cooperative Unions of Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal, Vinay Kumar Shahi (Bihar) will face Prabasini Sarangi (Odisha).
The other contest is in the North Eastern States Cooperative Unions constituency, where Mangal Jit Rai (Sikkim) is pitted against Jeena Potsangbam (Manipur). With 18 eligible voters, this contest is expected to attract considerable attention.
A keen contest is also expected in the National Level Cooperative Societies and Federations constituency, where six candidates are competing for five seats. Dileep Sanghani, Vishal Singh, Mohanbhai Kundariya, Meenesh Shah, Bipin Patel and Dalip Singh Yadav are in the fray. With only 16 voters deciding five winners, the battle is likely to be closely fought, as only one candidate will be left out.
One of the most high-profile contests will be in the constituency representing State Urban Cooperative Banks and Credit Societies Federations. Veteran cooperator H.K. Patil will take on Sahakar Bharati leader Sunil Gupta. The eight-member electoral college makes every vote crucial. The support of influential electors, including NUCFDC Chairman Jyotindra Mehta and Maharashtra Urban Cooperative Banks Federation representative Ajay Barmecha, is expected to play an important role in determining the outcome.
Another closely watched battle is in the constituency representing State-level Cooperative Federations and Associations from Western and Southern India. Maharashtra State Cooperative Labour Federation Chairman Sanjiv Kushalkar is contesting against former BJP MP and senior Karnataka cooperator Annasaheb Jolle. The constituency has 22 voters, with Gujarat accounting for six votes, Karnataka four and Maharashtra three, while the remaining votes are spread across Goa, Odisha, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and other states.
The Multi-State Cooperative Societies constituency is also expected to witness an interesting contest. Six candidates are in the race, including Maharashtra BJP MLC Sanjay Bhende, Nakul Kadu, C.B. Jisso, Suresh Wable, G.R. Ravinchandran and Jitendra Jain. A total of 44 voters are eligible to cast their ballots.
The contest became clearer after former IFFCO Director Sadhana Jadhav and Madhya Pradesh cooperator Arun Tomar withdrew their nominations. According to cooperative circles, Sanjay Bhende is emerging as one of the strongest contenders in this constituency.
With half of the Governing Council already elected unopposed and several prominent cooperative leaders locked in direct contests, all eyes are now on July 18, when polling for the remaining 10 seats will complete the composition of the new NCUI Governing Council.
