Souharda: President of WOCCU comes calling

World Council of Credit Cooperative Unions (WOCCU) President Brain Lee Branch is paying a visit to Souharda Federal Cooperative on 17th January that is Thursday. WOCCU has presently about 68,000 credit cooperatives operating in 109 countries and it serves over 230 million members at the international level.

NAFCUB which was member of WOCCU in the past, withdrew its membership owing to its inability to pay subscription fees.

Satish Marathe, Senior Cooperator, Director of RBI & NCDC, Uday Joshi National Secretary, Sahakar Bharati, are those who are likely to be present to welcome Branch. Souharda has also invited several cooperators of Karnataka to participate in this meeting.

The President of WOCCU since 2011, Branch is said to have greatly diversified WOCCU funding sources, tripled annual operations and introduced handheld technology for credit unions to extend remote service delivery in rural areas.

He has overseen development programs in more than 40 countries and led legislative and regulatory development in 12 countries. Branch has also increased opportunities for international engagement and exchange among credit unions and leagues across developed and developing systems.

It bears recall that WOCCU promotes self-sustainable development of credit cooperatives and empowers them to provide access to affordable financial products to local communities. It advocates for their interests & represents them before international organizations and national governments to improve legislation and regulation.

It also provides technical assistance programs to improve and strengthen financial performance and to increase outreach of credit cooperatives.

Brian Lee Branch President WOCCU, Kerry Dwanye Naylor, COO, Local Government federal Credit Union, North Carolina, US are visiting India from 15th to 18th January 2019.

The WOCCU representatives will study the structure and functions of Indian Credit Cooperatives and bring about synergy by sharing international experience and expertise.
