The Tamil Nadu govt has embarked on a huge effort to strengthen cooperative organizations in the state, media reports say. From opening new branches of co-op banks to new buildings for co-ops to modernizing co-op printing press, the list is long.

This was told by the Minister for co-operation in the state assembly. He said the government had sanctioned Rs 3.83 crore for new buildings for cooperative societies, would set up offices of the deputy registrar and assistant registrar of cooperative societies in Madurai and open nine new branches of four central cooperative banks.

The minister added facilities would be improved at cooperative societies in Dindigul, Namakkal and other places at a cost of 1.99 crore.

According to the minister, the government has sanctioned funds to build strong rooms and safety lockers in cooperative societies and to modernise cooperative printing presses at Namakkal, Thanjavur and Ramanathapuram.

Solar power projects would be set up in five central cooperative banks and the ceiling on loans from cooperative banks for working women has been increased from Rs 1 lakh to 3 lakh, the minister said.
