Eminent social activist and cooperative leader Dr. Nandini Azad has been conferred the prestigious Bharat Samman 2026 in recognition of her lifelong contribution to women’s empowerment and social development.
The award was presented recently at Hotel M J Grand Inn, Dehradun, by the International Institute of Education & Management in association with the Economic Growth Foundation, New Delhi.
Dr. Azad was honoured for her pioneering efforts in empowering economically disadvantaged women through grassroots institutions that have become nationally and internationally recognised models of inclusive development.
Her work has focused on promoting financial inclusion, entrepreneurship, collective action and social justice, enabling women from marginalized communities to achieve economic independence and dignity.
As President of the Working Women’s Forum (India) and the Indian Cooperative Network for Women (ICNW), both headquartered in Chennai, Dr. Azad has led one of India’s most influential women-led grassroots movements.
Under her leadership, the two organisations have expanded to more than 615,000 women members across four southern states, providing them access to credit, livelihood opportunities, leadership training and social support.
A defining feature of the organisations’ work is their pioneering Gender & Equity Model, which seeks to overcome structural barriers arising from caste, class and gender discrimination. The model combines cooperative principles with financial services, entrepreneurship promotion and community participation to create sustainable pathways for women’s social and economic empowerment. It has earned widespread appreciation from development practitioners, policymakers and international organisations as an effective model for inclusive growth.
The Bharat Samman 2026 recognises Dr. Azad’s decades-long commitment to advancing gender equality, social justice and sustainable community development. Organisers described her as a visionary leader whose work has transformed the lives of hundreds of thousands of women while demonstrating how grassroots institutions can become powerful instruments of economic and social change.
Representatives of the International Institute of Education & Management and the Economic Growth Foundation commended Dr. Azad’s unwavering dedication to creating equitable opportunities for marginalized women and lauded her leadership in building an inclusive and sustainable framework for women’s empowerment.
The honour also highlights the continuing contribution of the Working Women’s Forum (India) and the Indian Cooperative Network for Women in strengthening women’s cooperatives, expanding financial inclusion and promoting equitable development.
By empowering women to become entrepreneurs, community leaders and active participants in economic decision-making, the two organisations have emerged as important drivers of social and economic transformation, reinforcing the role of the cooperative movement in advancing inclusive and sustainable development across India.
