Cooperatives on rise in J&K: Minister

Claiming that the cooperative movement is picking up in Jammu and Kashmir, Minister of State for Cooperatives Manohar Lal said there are 3,433 cooperative societies registered in the state. Winding up a discussion in the Assembly, he also said the cooperative movement is being revived with renewed thrust to boost the state economy.

Of the 3,433 cooperative societies, 1,940 are registered under the Cooperative Act 1989. Another 1,493 societies are registered under the Cooperative Act 1999. He said there are 36,833 members in these cooperative societies. As many as 569 new cooperative societies have been registered during the past two years with a total membership of 4,134 under the twin Acts.

He said 593 Primary Agriculture Cooperative Societies (PACS) have been brought under the central package. The minister added that liabilities of 110 such societies have been cleared under the package while 400 more are being covered under it.

Lal said 570 cooperative societies have been registered in poultry sector and another 100 in the dairy sector over the years. These are doing good business to the mutual benefit of their members, he added
