In a significant move aimed at strengthening the cooperative agricultural ecosystem in Goa, Bharatiya Beej Sahakari Samiti Limited (BBSSL), New Delhi, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Adarsh Krishi Sahakari Kharedi Vikri Parakriya Saunstha Maryadit (AKSKVPS), Balli, Quepem, Goa, for the supply and distribution of certified high-quality seeds to farmers across the state.

The agreement is expected to improve farmers’ access to superior seed varieties and ensure timely availability of quality inputs for major crops cultivated in Goa. Under the partnership, AKSKVPS will function as the nodal cooperative agency in the state and will work in coordination with BBSSL to expand the reach of certified seeds among farmers through the cooperative network.

Officials associated with the initiative said the collaboration aims to enhance agricultural productivity, improve crop quality, and support sustainable farming practices by promoting the use of scientifically developed and certified seed varieties. The initiative is also expected to reduce farmers’ dependence on uncertified or low-quality seeds, which often affect crop yields and farm incomes.

The MoU reflects the growing role of cooperatives in strengthening agricultural supply chains and improving rural service delivery. BBSSL, which has been working to promote quality seed production and distribution through the cooperative sector, is expected to provide technical support, seed supply coordination, and assistance in expanding outreach activities in Goa.

As part of the agreement, both organisations will also align their efforts with various State and Central Government agricultural initiatives, including subsidy schemes, farmer welfare programmes, and productivity enhancement missions. The partnership seeks to ensure that farmers benefit not only from improved seed access but also from government-supported agricultural development programmes.

To ensure effective implementation, BBSSL and AKSKVPS will establish a joint monitoring and evaluation mechanism to regularly assess project outcomes, operational efficiency, and farmer outreach. The mechanism is expected to help identify challenges, monitor distribution systems, and strengthen transparency in programme execution.

The initiative comes at a time when improving seed quality and ensuring timely supply of agricultural inputs have become key priorities for enhancing farm productivity and climate resilience. Agricultural experts have often emphasized that certified seeds play a crucial role in increasing yields, improving resistance to pests and diseases, and ensuring better crop performance under changing climatic conditions.

The partnership is also expected to strengthen the cooperative movement in Goa by expanding the role of local cooperatives in agricultural development and farmer support services. By combining BBSSL’s expertise in seed distribution with AKSKVPS’s local outreach and farmer connect, the initiative aims to create a more efficient and farmer-centric seed supply ecosystem in the state.

The MoU is being seen as another step toward promoting cooperative-led agricultural growth and sustainable rural development in Goa.
