Vamnicom celebrates Foundation Day

The prestigious cooperative institute in the country Vaikunth Mehta National Institute of Cooperative Management (VAMNICOM) celebrated its Foundation Day on Sunday in Pune where scores of VIPs including Union Minister Radha Mohan Singh, NCUI President Chandra Pal Singh Yadav and others were present.

Vamnicom which is struggling to have a full-fledged Director of its own after the govt decision to not give extension to Sanjib Patjoshi was dolled up for the event. More than 300 participants, drawn mostly from Maharashtra as well as officials of NCUI and NCDC attended the event.

Speaking on the occasion, Union Minister Radha Mohan Singh said Vamnicom can play a crucial role in training people to adopt cashless transaction. He described cooperatives such as IFFCO, Amul and Saraswat Bank as such gems that have promoted cashless transactions by launching campaigns.

Singh said for the cashless transactions to be truly successful it will have to be promoted by the cooperative sector as the latter alone has access to the last man in the village.

He also mentioned the role of NCUI and NCCT in organizing training events and said together with NCDC they can bring about revolution in rural India.

Singh however did not touch upon the ongoing controversy on the issue of Directorship in Vamnicom. Readers would recall NCUI President shot a letter to the Ministry on the issue as it was for the first time that the Ministry directly appointed the head of the Vamnicom without keeping the apex body in the loop. Ashish Bhutani- Central Registrar took over last week even while the process of appointment of a new Director is underway.

Vamnicom Board has about 10 members which include NCUI President, Chief Executive, Director Vamnicom and others. NCUI Prez is also the Chairman of the Vamnicom Board and any decision by the Ministry without keeping him in the loop is violation of MSCS Act, said a cooperator.
