NAFCUB: Dr M L Abhyankar elected new Chairman

Dr M L Abhyankar, the high profile cooperator from Pune has been elected as the new Chairman of apex urban cooperative banks federation NAFCUB in an election on Thursday which saw unprecedented participation by the delegates.

Dr Abhyankar is regarded as a scholar who acquired Doctorate and fought many a battle on behalf of urban cooperative bank in the past. A committed cooperator Dr Abhyankar has been on the panel of Malegam Committee constituted by RBI to frame guidelines for the licensing of the urban cooperative banks.

There were two front runners-Dr Abhyankar and Jatinder Mehta. The counting ended by 7.30 in the evening and was followed by AGM. Directors were left alone to decide upon a consensus candidate. Dr Mukund Abhyankar was the unanimous choice, said an insider to the Indian Cooperative.

The two Vice-Chairmen elected on Thursday are Ram Babu Shandilaya of Jharkhand and Vidyadhar Anaskar who is a new Director from Maharashtra.

Some of the new faces who have joined on the newly-constituted board are VidyadharAnaskar from Maharashtra, Advocate Jaya Verma from Kerala, O P Sharma from Haryana, Alka Srivastava from Madhya Pradesh, Mr Vidya Dhar Achyut Vaishampayan from Maharashtra, R M Sethi from Uttar Pradesh, Ashok Sauandattikar from Maharashtra, Ramesh Bung from Andhra Pradesh and government nominee Vikas Thakur.

More than 400 votes were cast in the banking sector while about 300 votes were cast in the credit sector. Even the Mahila bank sector saw huge participation with more than 40 votes that were cast. In cooperative terms it is rated hugely participated election.
