IFFCO ranks first in 30 largest co-ops: Co-op Monitor

IFFCOCongratulations began to pour as soon as a tweet by the Managing Director Dr U S Awasthi of IFFCO announced that IFFCO ranks first in 30 largest cooperatives in Agriculture & Food Industry by turnover on GDP per capita in the world.

Effort to find out the source as well as the global agency which accorded this prestigious ranking to the IFFCO led us to World Co-operative Monitor –an agency dedicated to depict a multi-dimensional representation of global panorama of cooperatives globally based not only on turn-over but also their impact in the country they operate.

Announcing the prized news Dr. U S Awasthi (@drusawasthi) tweeted on Wednesday # IFFCO ranked first in 30 largest cooperative in Agriculture & Food Industry by turnover on # GDP per capita around the world. Great news for us.#

The 2014 World Co-operative Monitor was officially released in October, 2014.

The release read” So as to gain a more nuanced view of the relevance of co-operatives in their country, the Monitor also ranks the top 300 co-operative and mutual organisations based on the ratio to gross domestic product (GDP) per capita, relating the turnover of the co-operative to the purchasing power of the country in which it operates. In this ranking, there are more Asian co-operatives in the top 10, with Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited (IFFCO) occupying the top position.”

But the big news is association of European Research Institute on Cooperative and Social Enterprises (Euricse) as a technical-scientific partner which has lent methodological strength to this finding.

In order to expand and give more scientific basis to the project, Euricse and the Alliance have established a scientific committee consisting of Euricse researchers and other international experts with diverse training and skills.

Meanwhile, there was a scramble at Twitter space to greet IFFCO and MD Dr Awasthi.
