Campco urges PM for quick action on illegal Arecanut imports

Campco, a prominent cooperative organization, has once again raised urgent concerns with  Prime Minister, Sri. Narendra Modi, regarding the alarming influx of illegal Arecanut imports and subsequent auctions of seized goods.

In a letter emphasizing the gravity of the situation, Campco highlights the severe repercussions these activities pose to both farmers’ livelihoods and the integrity of the market.

One of the primary concerns emphasized by Campco is the necessity to uphold the minimum import price of Rs. 351/- during auctions conducted by Customs, DRI, or any relevant agency. This measure is deemed essential to maintain fair trade practices and thwart any attempts to undercut the market by selling Arecanut below the established price floor.

Furthermore, Campco advocates for stringent quality testing of all seized Arecanut goods, particularly those originating from countries like Indonesia and Burma, where quality standards may not align with those set by FSSAI.

By subjecting seized Arecanut to rigorous testing at accredited laboratories before auction, Campco aims to ensure consumer safety and prevent any compromise to public health due to the consumption of substandard products.

The impact of illegal Arecanut imports on farmers cannot be overstated, as emphasized by President Sri A Kishore Kumar Kodgi. With a significant portion of Karnataka’s farmers engaged in Arecanut cultivation, the collapse of the market due to the influx of illegally imported goods would plunge countless families into financial distress.

Campco highlights the urgent need for the Prime Minister’s intervention to mitigate these adverse effects and safeguard the interests of the farming community.

In urging the Prime Minister to take decisive action against illegal Arecanut imports, Campco underscores the broader significance of such measures. Not only would they restore stability to the market and protect farmers’ livelihoods, but they would also reaffirm the government’s commitment to upholding fair trade practices and ensuring the well-being of its citizens.

Addressing this issue is paramount in maintaining the integrity of the market and preserving the socio-economic fabric of Arecanut-producing regions.
