UP: Dairy revolution on anvil; Sodhi meets Yogi

With changing of the guard in Uttar Pradesh, Amul-the leading dairy cooperative in the country is likely to help Parag the UP state dairy cooperative start a new chapter. A high-level delegation from GCMMF visited Lucknow last week in this connection, say media reports.

Though Amul already had its operations in Uttar Pradesh, a friendly BJP govt in the state has encouraged it to expand its business on the one hand and make Parag operate on professional lines on the other, said a GCMMF source.

Yogi Adityamath said the smiles on faces of farmers could be achieved by igniting a dairy revolution in the state and Amul will prove helpful in the mission, quote media reports.

Welcoming a delegation from Gujarat which comprised of Minister Shankarbhai Chaudhary and GCCMF‘s MD R S Sodhi, Yogi expressed his desire to have the Amul like dairy co-ops in the state.

R S Sodhi says Amul is paying Rs 360 crore annually to farmers in UP and plans to increase this to Rs 3500 crore per annum. The chief minister extended support by offering to enter into an agreement with the company to operate the milk processing plant coming up in Varanasi. He also wanted the plant’s capacity to be raised from Rs 4 lakh litre to 6 lakh litre a day, Sodhi who made a presentation in the meeting explained.

Sodhi  also promised to offer Amul’s expertise to  Parag and said it may also provide training to the staff-members of Parag.

The CM said UP produced milk twice as much as Gujarat produces. What we need is better and planned marketing of processed milk, he added. He also expressed concern over a decrease in the number of Milk Cooperative Unions from 59 to a woeful 18 connected with Parag and he underlined the need for a fresh policy initiative to revive the organization, say media reports.

According to MoU signed the Varanasi plant should be handed over to Amul, while the plants at Gorakhpur and Kanpur be operated on the lines of Amul, sources quoted words of the Chief Minister.
