The Tamil Nadu government has constituted a special committee to examine the feasibility of establishing a separate District Central Cooperative Bank (DCCB) in Tiruppur district, according to media reports.
Despite Tiruppur being carved out as a separate district 17 years ago, it continues to depend on the District Central Cooperative Banks in neighbouring Coimbatore and Erode, as it does not have an independent DCCB headquartered in the district.
According to media reports, G Latha, Registrar of Cooperative Societies, has constituted the committee to explore the possibilities of setting up a separate bank.
Retired IAS officer Jatindra Nath Swain has been appointed Chairman of the committee, while P Loganathan, Managing Director of Tamil Nadu Urban Cooperative Banks, will serve as its coordinator.
The committee also includes KVS Kumar, Managing Director of Erode DCCB; S Ramakrishnan, Managing Director of Coimbatore DCCB; VM Chandrasekar, General Manager of Tamil Nadu State Apex Cooperative Bank; and Regional Joint Registrars T Prabhu, P Kantharaja and A Alagiri, representing Tiruppur, Erode and Coimbatore districts, respectively.
The proposed DCCB could provide Tiruppur’s cooperative credit structure with an independent institutional framework and strengthen banking support for cooperative societies and their members in the district.
