SEWA completes 50 years; Congratulations pour in

The globally recognized co-operative body India’s Self-Employed Women’s Association SEWA has completed 50 years of its existence empowering downtrodden women.

The social media handle of SEWA tweeted “Today marks the 50th anniversary of SEWA, an organisation whose history is deeply rooted in the stories of struggle and development.”

SEWA started from Ahmedabad in 1972 has expanded to several states in these 50 years. Its founder Ms. Ela Bhatt (Elaben) has been a widely recognized face for her novel ideas of empowering women.

It was recently in the news when SEWA announced that it will help set up two co-operatives with funding from retail co-ops in the UK.
