Punjab: Violence in co-op elections

The recent election to the Bhai Rupa village agriculture cooperative society in Rampura Phul, Punjab witnessed a violent clash between Akali and Congress workers. The local police have registered a case of attempt to murder under the Arms Act against Akali leaders, reports Times of India.

Akali leaders have denied indulging in violence and described the registration of a case as politically motivated. Akali leaders have also charged that as their candidates were not allowed to file nominations, all Congress candidates were elected unopposed.

Denying Akali allegations, Congress says Akali workers had gathered in large numbers spoiling for a confrontation.
