Punjab takes a leaf from NCUI book, decides to strengthen PACS

Without giving it a name Punjab govt has decided to follow the idea- first mooted by NCUI CE N Satyanarayan in his pre-budget consultation with the Union Minister Mr Arun Jaitley- of empowering Primary Agriculture Co-op Societies in the state.

With a view to strengthening PACS, and Punjab government plans to transform them into ‘cooperative rural hubs’ to supply essential goods at village level, reports UNI.

A government official revealed this while addressing a workshop on PACS. The official added that more ‘agricultural service centres’ would be established in the PACSs.

As per an estimate, nearly 30 per cent PACSs in Punjab are financially weak and there is a need to lick their financial background into shape.

Earlier, the govt talked of providing farmers with farm implements on custom-hiring basis so they could cut their capital expenditures in purchase of costly tools.
