Mumbai is home to 41,501 cooperative societies, of which 40,853 are functional, according to the National Cooperative Database (NCD), Union Cooperation Minister Amit Shah informed the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.

In a written reply, Shah said 19,911 functional cooperative societies are profit-making, while 14,877 are running at a loss. Financial data is not available for 6,065 societies. The figures include housing, consumer, credit and labour cooperatives operating across Mumbai.

The Minister highlighted the Centre’s efforts to modernise the cooperative sector, stating that the PACS Computerisation Project has been expanded from 63,000 to 79,630 societies, with the financial outlay increased to Rs 2,925.39 crore.

He also said the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC) has cumulatively disbursed Rs 5.74 lakh crore, including Rs 3.97 lakh crore during the last five years, to support infrastructure, diversification and capacity building of cooperative institutions.

Shah further listed key initiatives such as Model Bye-laws for PACS, the World’s Largest Decentralized Grain Storage Plan, the National Cooperative Database, strengthening of the three-tier cooperative credit structure, and the establishment of Tribhuvan Sahkari University to boost governance, digitalisation and capacity building in the cooperative sector.
