A report from Times of India says in Aurangabad in Maharashtra even as the kharif season has begun, farmers from the region not able to avail themselves of crop loans from banks despite the government promising disbursement of financial aid to them.
A source familiar with the situation says banks are just refusing farmers loans one pretext or another. The state govt. has yet to intervene in the matter, adds source.
However, state officials claim they have asked all the eight district collectors of Marathwada to ensure loans are given to farmers. The NABARD will make 60% contribution in the distribution of crop loans, while the state cooperative bank and respective district cooperative banks will contribute 10% and 15% respectively. The state government will share the the remaining 15%, officials said.
