More than court 33,000 cases of Maharashtra’s four lakh registered cooperative societies including residential, industrial and commercial societies are pending. The cases are being fought in different courts between managing committees and their members.

According to Ramesh Prabhu the founding president of Maharashtra Society Welfare Association, Mumbai’s residential cooperative societies have spent Rs 16 crore in 2016-17 as legal fees to fight these cases. It is estimated that the annual expenditure for the maintenance of cooperative societies in Mumbai metropolis is Rs 1200 crore.

Prabhu added that, the management committees involved in litigation are unable to do good work. He said arbitrators are urgently needed to resolve the issues.

He said a three-day Housing Society Management Show is being organized at the Nehru Center in Worli from 7 to 9 February to smooth the functioning of societies and reduce conflicts. Legal aid professional organizations specially designed for housing societies will participate in the show.
