Co-op amendment bill passed

Maharashtra Legislative Council unanimously passed a Bill related to co-operative societies and extended the date of elections for these bodies till June 30, 2015 on Tuesday.

The Maharashtra Co-operative Society (Amendment) Bill was passed with support from all parties. The Bill has been already passed by Maharashtra Assembly.

The Bill seeks to promote professional management and autonomous functioning of the cooperative societies.

Co-operative Minister Chandrakant Patil, who introduced the Bill in the Uper House, said “we have created a separate commission to conduct election of co-operative institutions.”

“We had submitted an affidavit in the Bombay High Court that all the election procedure will be completed by December 31, 2014. But, due to some technical problems this is not going to be possible for all types of co-operative societies.”

“We are trying to complete elections to “C” and “D” category co-operatives by this deadline. For the remaining ones, we have extended the process till June 30, 2015,” Minister added.
