Union Fisheries Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh, popularly known as Lalan Singh, will visit Gangtok and Mangan districts of Sikkim on November 2-3 to review fisheries development initiatives and inaugurate projects worth Rs 3.75 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY).
During the visit, Singh will launch the Standard Operating Procedure for organic fish farming, distribute Kisan Credit Cards to fish farmers and hand over cheques under the Mukhya Mantri Matsya Utpadan Yojana. He will also interact with fish farmers and cooperative societies to assess ground-level challenges.
At the Live Fish Vending Centre in Mangshila, the minister will meet the Fish Farmers’ Cooperative Society to discuss marketing and cooperative activities.
The Northeast’s freshwater resources and biodiversity offer significant potential for organic fisheries and premium fish products. Under PMMSY, 34 fisheries production and processing clusters have been notified nationwide, including organic fisheries clusters in Sikkim and Meghalaya.
The visit aims to strengthen infrastructure, market linkages and value addition, boosting farmers’ incomes and expanding access to domestic and international markets.
