Jakarta: Govt asks 43,000 co-ops to shut down

The Jakartapost reports that Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises Minister has issued decrees to close 43,000 inactive cooperatives. “We closed the cooperatives because they are not active anymore,” the minister said.

The ministry categorizes cooperatives into three groups, according to their performance: inactive cooperatives, unhealthy cooperatives and healthy cooperatives.

From about 150,000 cooperatives, about 75,000 were deemed unhealthy, said the minister.

“Among indications of a healthy cooperative is a growing number of members and holding annual membership meetings,” said the Minister.
