Fadnavis thanks co-ops for agri growth

Addressing recently a high level meeting of govt officials, Maharastra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis congratulated cooperatives for doing their bit in helping the state achieve a double-digit growth rate in agriculture, reports Press Trust of India.

It is worth mentioning that a committee formed by the state govt to set new benchmarks to consolidate positive agriculture growth would, among others, have a ranking official from the department of cooperation as well.

The chief minister hinted that the government may merge loss-making district co-operative banks with the state co-operative bank.

The move, he said, would strengthen the network of financial institutions to bring about 30 lakh farmers within institutional credit

Sources say there are about a dozen district co-operative banks reeling financially which need to be helped. But overall, district co-operative banks have better infrastructures in rural areas, sources add.
