Odisha Vigilance has arrested a former secretary of a service cooperative society for allegedly misappropriating government funds worth Rs 33.80 lakh during 2017-18.
The accused, Patitapaban Majhi, earlier served as executive secretary of Garhsantri Service Co-operative Society under Angul United Central Co-operative Bank Ltd’s Banarpal branch. He is presently posted as a banking assistant at the bank’s headquarters in Angul.
According to Vigilance officials, Majhi allegedly manipulated entries in the society’s Day Books to falsely show that government collections and deposits had been credited to the bank. Investigators later found that the cash amounting to Rs 33,80,963 was never deposited with the cooperative bank.
The funds, intended for agricultural and cooperative development schemes, were allegedly diverted for personal use. A case has been registered under the Prevention of Corruption Act and relevant IPC sections. Further investigation is in progress.
