Cooperation expands beyond Credit, says Ministry

The Ministry of Cooperation has highlighted the rapid expansion of India’s cooperative sector over the past five years, saying the movement has grown far beyond its traditional role in agricultural credit.

According to the ministry, cooperatives now have a significant presence across key sectors, including dairy, fisheries, sugar and transportation, reflecting their growing contribution to rural development and economic growth.

The ministry also noted that cooperatives are delivering a wider range of citizen-centric services through Common Service Centres (CSCs), petrol pumps, fair price shops and custom hiring centres.

These initiatives, it said, are creating new opportunities for rural communities while strengthening self-reliance and prosperity. The ministry described the cooperative movement as a key driver of inclusive growth under the theme of “Prosperity through Cooperation.”
