Amul-Nandini merger: Making mountain out of mole hill

Speaking from the inaugural platform of Mandya Mega Dairy, Union Minister Amit Shah said that the White Revolution in Gujarat has changed the fortunes of farmers and through Amul, 60,000 crore rupees are deposited into the bank accounts of about 36 lakh women annually.

Shah further said “Amul and Nandini together will work towards setting up primary dairy in every village of Karnataka and in three years there will not be a single village in Karnataka without a primary dairy.”

Opposition leaders and unbaked media reports have made a mountain out of mole. There are several states including UP, Andhra and Assam which are seeking Amul’s expertise to ignite dairy revolution in their respective states. No hula bulla was ever made. But since Shah said the same thing, the Opposition, ever eager to corner Shah, made it an issue of a non-issue.

Congress leader Siddaramaiah savaged Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah’s idea of Nandini brand from Karnataka Milk Federation with Gujarat’s Amul brand working together as a potential move to plunder Karnataka’s dairy farmers.

The Congress leader issued a statement charging that the ruling BJP will destroy the state’s cooperative banks and harm the economy.

Later, state CM Bommai had to clarify that there is no merger proposal between Amul and Nandini.
