Amul finds niche mkt in US-Canada: Sodhi

sodhiGCMMF’s MD R.S. Sodhi says Amul’s overseas operations have progressed by leaps and bounds. Its products are not only popular with the Indian diasporas in the US and Canada but also with ethnic Asians living in these two affluent countries, he told talking to Indian Cooperative.

According to Mr. Sodhi, Amul’s plant in the US is doing well and it may soon begin exporting its products to various locations in the west including Europe. There has lately been a surge in demand for Amul products among Indian restaurants and retail shops in America as well, he says.

Sources say earlier Amul faced the challenge of exporting fresh milk products from distant India but with the US plant showing excellent performance the challenge stands dealt with successfully, sources underline.

GCMMF officials have unveiled a big plan to sell Amul products especially in the US cities that boast significant Indian population. The cities include New Jersey, New York and Boston, to name a few, said officials.

The plant, in New Jersey, is Amul’s first manufacturing plant outside India. The plant is set up under a tripartite agreement between Amul Dairy, (GCMMF) and New Jersey based NRI businessman Piyush Patel.

The Gujarat govt. has recently given the go ahead and Amul has started production of clarified butter, cottage cheese and a sweet dish made of yogurt at the US plant said Amul officials.
