Rupee Bank: Will it fall on Abhyankar’s shoulders finally?

Lakhs of depositors have sunk into despair since the news has come of Corporation Bank also refusing to take over the assets and liabilities of Rupee Co-operative bank, according to Hindu.

Confirming the development Maharashtra State Cooperation Minister said he plans to approach Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley to put pressure on the Corporation Bank management to take over the ailing UCB.

Earlier, NAFCUB President Mr Mukund Abhyankar was approached by the state govt to take over the bank. Abhyankar who is on the board of the Cosmos bank had demanded interest free loans and free hand to appoint persons of his choice to turn around the fortunes of the bank.

Talking about the liabilities of the ucb Abhyankar had said “I have asked for Rs 300 crore of interest free loan; I do not demand any donation and I promise to repay them sooner than later.” But given the present state of affairs of the Bank where it has to dole out a sum of Rs 1400 crore, this demand is not unreasonable, he added.

Even earlier attempts made by the Saraswat Bank and the Allahabad bank in this regard had been to no avail. Till recently the choice was between Abhyankar and the Corporation Bank but with the failure of talks with the latter the state govt may fall in line with Mukund Abhayankar whose credentials as an architect of the fastest growing urban cooperative bank Cosmos are outstanding.
