RBI Report: Operating profit of scheduled UCBs rises to Rs 4,632cr

The 51 scheduled urban cooperative banks earned Rs 5,479 crore as interest on investments as on 31st March 2023 and maximum earned by the Saraswat Cooperative Bank i.e. Rs 943.2 crore. Earlier i.e. 2021-22, the scheduled UCBs earned Rs 5,038 crore.

Besides, the operating profit of scheduled UCBs increased from Rs 3,802 crore as on 31st March 2022 to Rs 4,632 crore in the 2022-23 FY. The Kapol Cooperative Bank, Janalaxmi Cooperative Bank (Nashik) and others registered loss as on 31st March 2023.

As per the RBI publication, the operating expenses of the scheduled UCBs increased from Rs 2,928 crore (2021-22 FY) to Rs 3,008 crore (2022-23 FY) and staff expenses grew from Rs 2,878 crore to Rs 2,953 crore as on 31st March 2023.

The scheduled UCBs spent on auditors and directors fees of 42.8 crore and 12.52 crore in the 2022-23 FY respectively. Besides, these UCBs spent Rs 60.96 crore on postage, telegrams and stamps and Rs 47.93 crore on stationery and printing as on 31st March 2023.

During the year, the amount spent by these UCBs on advertisement and publicity stood at Rs 46.01 crore. The scheduled UCBs which have not spent money on advertisement and publicity in the 2022-23 FY were Amanath Cooperative Bank, Goa Urban Cooperative Bank, Indian Mercantile Cooperative Bank, Nagpur Urban Cooperative Bank and others.

The total expenses (Interest paid, operating expenses and other operating expenses) of scheduled UCBs increased from Rs 17,586 crore (2021-22) to Rs 17,816 crore as on 31st March 2023.

The net profit after taxes of the scheduled UCBs decreased Rs 1,532 crore to Rs 1,275 crore in the 2022-23 FY.

In the last ten years, the numbers of urban cooperative banks have decreased from 1,589 in 2013-14 to 1,502 in 2022-23. As on 31st March 2023, there were 51 scheduled and 1451 non-scheduled urban cooperative banks. The single state scheduled UCBs were 19 whereas Multi-State Scheduled UCBs were 32.

The deposits and loans & advances of all scheduled urban cooperative banks stood at Rs 2.39 lakh crore and 1.51 lakh crore as on 31st March 2023. The total assets of these banks increased from Rs 2.98 lakh crore in the 2021-22 FY to Rs 3.06 lakh crore in the 2022-23 FY.
