Ministers & MLAs clash for supremacy in Amaravati DCCB elections

Amravati District Cooperative Bank’s final list of candidates after scrutiny was published on Wednesday. The election which is scheduled for 4th October 2021, has many VIPs in the fray.

Interestingly, many MLA including Minister of State Bacchu Kadu from PraharJanshakti Paksh Party, Daryapur MLA Balwant Wankhade from Congress, Akot MLA Prakash Bharasakale from BJP and others are in the race.

It is reported that in this election one group will be led by Women and Child Development Minister Yashomati Thakur (Congress) and another by MoS Bacchu Kadu.

The election is taking place after a gap of 11 years. The last election in the bank was held in 2010. At that time, the Congress District President Bablu Deshmukh panel had won the election. The bank remained under the control of Deshmukh’s group for 11 years.

About 183 nominations had been filed by candidates till the last date i.e. 6th September 2021 but only 106 papers were found to be valid after scrutiny. A few of them were rejected on the grounds that his/her society is a defaulter of the bank.

Many candidates had filed two, three or more copies of nomination papers, said Mahendra Singh Chavan, the Returning Officer while providing Indian Cooperative correspondent with information.

The bank’s board consists of 21 elected directors and around 1700 voters are eligible to cast the votes in the election.

“After scrutiny, now the process of withdrawal has been started. Candidates can withdraw his/her names between 8th September 2021 to 22nd September 2021. Afterwards, on 23 September 2021 the election symbol will be given and the polling will be held on 4th October 2021. The counting of votes will be held on the next day of polling”, informed Chavan on the phone.

Readers would recall that the bank hogged the media headlines in the wake of misappropriation of funds and the state government superseded the board of the bank. The government appointed the administrator in the bank. The probe is still going on in the matter related to the fund diversion in mutual funds.

Amravati DCCB has a business mix of Rs 1937 crore and earned a net profit of Rs 4.57 crore in the 2020-21 Financial Year . At present the bank is rendering services through its 90 branches, 3 Extension Counters and 5 Regional Offices with its Head Office functioning from Camp Road, Amravati.
