Mehta, Anaskar and several others pay tributes to Vaidyanathan

Jyotindra Mehta, NAFCUB President

In passing away of of Dr. A. Vaidyanathan, Indian cooperative movement has lost a person who had studied and understood the cooperative credit structure. He understood the stifling effects of restrictive cooperative legislations on the growth of cooperatives in general and rural credit cooperatives in particular.

He was a strong votary of liberal acts. His comprehensive report on the rural cooperative credit system in India and the far-reaching recommendations, now famously known as Vaidyanathan Committee Report, was a watershed event for the sector.

The reformist impact of the report was diluted to great extant due to tardy and partial implementation of its recommendations. While the financial package part of the recommendations was given effect to, many important recommendations on structural and administrative reforms in the sector were not taken seriously in many states.”

Vidyadhar Anaskar, NAFCUB Vice-President

Saddened to hear the demise of Prof A Vaidyanathan, an eminent economist and former member of the planning commission. He always tried hard to strengthen the cooperative movement.

The strategies suggested by him for the development of the cooperative sector including there should be professionalism in cooperatives, there should experts as directors on the board of cooperative banks, depositors can also have the right to exercise the voting rights, there should be minimum interference of government in the activities of DCCBs and SCBs among other things.

The role played by him in strengthening the cooperative movement will always be remembered. I had a chance to meet him in 2004 in Mumbai.
