Bassein Catholic Co-op Bank election: Outgoing BoDs stand divided

The elections of Maharashtra’s leading bank-Bassein Catholic Cooperative Bank have been announced and the candidates have geared up to woo voters for winning the elections slated for 12th June 2022.

The filling of the nomination papers is over and the list after scrutiny has been made public. However, it has come to notice that the outgoing team of the board of directors has divided into many groups. Several directors from the team are fighting the election as independent candidates whereas a few have formed their own groups.

159 nominations in total had been received on the last date. Some candidates had filed more than one set of papers. But after scrutiny the papers of 120 candidates have been found valid. The final list after withdrawal will be released on 2nd June.

Meanwhile, informed sources said there would be intense fights because there are too many candidates trying their luck. Sources added two panels namely the Progressive Panel and the Janhit Panel are at the forefront.

The Progressive Panel is led by Yuri Gonsalves and is comprised of seven directors of the outgoing board and some others whereas the Janhit Panel is headed by the outgoing Chairman Ryan Fernandes and has only a single member of the outgoing board in his team, the rest are newcomers.

Besides, it is being said many including former Chairman Sachin Pereira heading the Parivartan Panel are also in the race with their squad. The bank board comprises 21 elected directors out of which 16 are from the general category and the rest will be elected from the reserved categories including Women, OBC, SC/ST, and others.

DDR Palghar Housare has been appointed as the returning officer to oversee the election process. The counting of votes will be done on 14th June. The total eligible voters are 80k and 140 polling centers are supposed to be made.

The bank’s gross business stood at Rs 11,960 crore and Net NPA was 1.55 percent as of 31st March 2021. The cooperative bank has 77 ATMs in Maharashtra, which include 13 offsite ATMs.
